During a meeting in the Waltons house Reverend Fordwick, Buck Vernon, Corabeth
Godsey and Grandma Walton all disapprove John Boys idea to publish excerpts of
Hilters "Mein Kampf" in the next issue of his Blue Ridge Chronicle.
But John-Boy says: I think people ought to know about it.
Grandma: Any man that would burn the Holy Bible is a
heathen!
The Reverend concludes: Sorry John-Boy, I thought a little
friendly advise might save you some trouble. . |

Image the scene where John Boy and Ben are driving Jason to the Dew Drop Inn and
suddenly they discover Mary-Ellen and David Spencer hugging in a car next to the road.
When they have passed them the scene continues in a romantic way and David says: I gotta get you home.
Mary-Ellen answers: I am home. Youre my home!
David: I love you, Mary-Ellen.
And when she starts to kiss him he says: No, we have to to
be sensible.
Mary-Ellen: You be sensible.
David: Do you know what would happen right now if your daddy
came walking along
Mary-Ellen: Hed shoot you!
David: Did anybody ever tell you youre crazy?
Mary-Ellen: No, am I?
David: No, I am!. |

In the closing announcements of the service the Reverend says that their heritage must
be protected against those who want to alter or destroy it.
He also says the writings of Hitler will be introduced into their community throught the
efforts of John Boy and he even quotes from Proverbs: A
prudent man forseeth the evil and hideth himself but the Simple pass on and are punished.
He hopes the Blue Ridge Chronicle will share the responsibility to spread
love instead of hate and the word of God instead of the writing of the Godless.. |

Even his father tries to change John Boys mind. He asks John Boy if Germany isnt a little far away to worry about whats
going on over there?
He guessed most people figure the Chronicle is gonna cover local news.
But John Boy says to this: Daddy, the worlds getting
smaller everyday. And pretty soon any piece of news is gonna be local news. Now I gotta be
free to pass on to my readers anything that I think is important. That right is been done
away in Germany, completely.
At the end of the scene John understands the motives of his son. Im proud of you. Acting on what you believe.
And they look in each others eyes with good understanding. |

That evening everyone sits around the camp-fire singing and celebrating the beauty
contest. The Reverend will demonstrate how greatly concerned they are by the trouble in
Germany. Buck Vernon found a real piece of junk in his shop: Mein Kampf. He proposes that
night they have a symbolic book-burning or their own.
Buck Vernon walks to the fire and adds something to this: I
found a whole bundle of german books. I just had them to keep the fire warm! And the
throws all the books in the fire.
John Boy now rushes to the fire and starts to defend himself.
Among other things he asks everyone: Do you realize that
this kind of thing happens all over Germany? And right now Germany and Waltons
Mountain are not very far apart in my mind.
He just wanted to let everyone know what is happening in Europe just like he informs them
about all other things in his newspaper.
Then he suddenly sees a book in the fire thats written in german language and he
wished there was someone who could read german.
Mrs. Brimmer, whose husband has been born in Germany, knows a bit and she wants to read
the book:
"Am Anfang schiff Gott Himmel und Erde. Und die Erde
war wüßt und leer...."
"In the beginning God created heaven and
earth
"
After these words everyone felt a lump in their throat and realized what they have done
and what they were burning: The Holy Bible !
